The transmission, one of the most important and complex components of your car, is responsible for controlling the application of power generated by the engine and sent to the driveshaft. Because of this primary task, it receives a lot more wear and tear than many of the other parts of your vehicle. Furthermore, friction and heat put more stress on it, subjecting it to even more potential issues.
Keep in mind that car problems, even if they start small, can turn into bigger headaches when you delay necessary repairs. Although transmission repairs will cost you, they are still far cheaper than ending up with a prematurely failed automobile. To help you prevent this from happening, check the three most common symptoms of a transmission going bad.
Non-responsive/delays in response
Hesitating or refusing to go into gear is a sign of car transmission trouble. A correctly functioning transmission responds right away once you shift from park to drive.
In cars with automatic transmissions, the delay before the gear engages usually happens when making the shift from park or drive. In manual transmissions, the same thing happens. However, once it does shift into the correct gear, a surge in the RPMs will take place, but the vehicle still will not move in the speed as quickly as it should.
These sounds are basically noises that you have not heard before – because your car should not make them. When you hear weird humming, clunking, whining or buzzing sounds, it is time to take your vehicle to a transmission repair shop.
Fluid leaks/low fluid levels
Continuing to operate your car even though it suffers from fluid leaks or low fluid levels is one of the most common causes of transmission problems. Your vehicle’s transmission largely depends on automatic transmission fluid (ATF), since it performs a lot of tasks, such as lubricating, conditioning and cleaning the seals. Without it, your car’s engine is at greater risk of seizing up and failing to function completely.
As soon as you notice any of the above-mentioned signs, work on repairs right away.
